Element of Earth
06.05.08 (9:59 am)   [edit]
In my tradition we focus on the 5 Elements of Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Spirit for personal, physical and spiritual growth. I am born under the sign of Taurus so earth comes naturally to me. Lately I have been stuck in the Air ( flighty, airheaded LOL) and need to come back down to Earth. When this happens i literally plant myself in the earth. I am working on the House Garden at the Adult Family home that I work at besides working at the hotel. I have found this to be a great place and way to meditate and ground myself when life gets to me or when I am out of balance with the other elements. Just thought I'd share this with you. No matter what your spiritual path, gardening and working with Mother Nature can bring us peace and harmony when life is out of whack. Blessings, OWL

Economy Rant
06.04.08 (6:33 pm)   [edit]

Ok, I have come across some very interesting people here at the hotel, but nothing intrgiues me more than the state of the economy and what it is doing to people who work hard everyday.  I am finding more and more of our guests are staying longer, renting by the week or the month... They usually have children, and can stay at our hotel for $700.00 a month to $1100.00 per month, depending on the size of the room or how many people.

When you look at the amount of rent one pays here in Wisconsin, ranging from $450.00 per month to $1000.00 per month depending on the number of bedroom, you can see the trends.  When you add in electricity/heat, phone/ cable, these people could be paying almost $2000.00 per month.  No wonder they are staying here.  Here they have rent, cable, wireless internet,  local phone, heat, air conditioning, lights for alot less.  we even have microwaves and fridges in the rooms.  They just don't have any privacy if it is more than 1 person in the room.

My biggest rant is that this should not be.  We would not have gotten this job had we not been in the same boat as a lot of these new guests are in.  So we empathise with them.  Living is very expensive.  thank God i live where I work one of my jobs and the other one is only 6 miles away, or i'd have to use more gas.  I hope that our economy gets straightened out soon, and that wages will meet the needs if the prices stay high.  Groceries are terrible, electricity costs more,  everyone is feeling the pinch.  Even those people who think they had it made in the shade are hurting in the pockets.

I pray that everyone that comes into this hotel finds peace and happiness to some degree while they are here.

Blessings,

OWL

Introducing Owllyn's Rants
06.03.08 (12:30 pm)   [edit]

Welcome to my rants. Ok, I don't tend to rant all the time. I have found that blogging and such can relieve stress levels, and I am a stress magnet. Let me start by introducing myself as best as I can. I am a 38 year old female whose follows the path of the Craft ( non-wiccan). I am married and have been for almost 20 years ( our anniversary is next month. I have 3 sones who are 18, 16 and 11. I am a workaholic, I work from 8 am to 10 pm and beyond if necessary. I enjoy reading, writing and the outdoors. I love my garden and my herb garden. I love music.

I sing and play guitar and drums. Currently I am working 2 jobs. I live at one, the hotel that my husband and I are night managers/ housekeepers/ maintenance people for. I make a wage plus our apartment, and this job I truly love while my husband truly hates. My other job is as a house counselor for an Adult Family home. We have 3 clients who are cognitively or mentally challenged.

You will find that I hate the word "disability" I think that everyone can do anything that they set their minds to regardless of the challenges that they face. I prefer the word "challenge" Developmentally Challenged, having a mental illness, having a physical challenge just sounds so much more dignified than this person is disabled. Dis means can't. dis abled means can't be able. Thus making it sound impossible, however everything is possible. it may mean adaptation or harder work, but not impossible. I also hate the word "retarded" People with a cognitive delay or challence should not be refered to as retarded. People who are mentally unhealthy, should not be called nuts, fruitloops or crazy. they have a mental illness, one that can be assisted with medication, counseling and diet and exercise. You see I am first and foremost a humanitarian. I am an advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. ok, that is me in a nut shell ( no pun intended) Owll
